Hi to everyone.

Have just set myself up with GPSNavX, Macbook and BU-353, Irish Maptech Charts. It is working well so far - very happy. The next step is AIS.

Was interested to know if anyone has had experience with the current range of Class B AIS Transponders? I particularly like the look of the Digital Yacht AIT250 - Has anyone used it with a mac?

Thanks for any help.

Navicom introduces DSC VHF with AIS

The French company has just introduced a new DSC VHF with integrated AIS receiver.
Plus an external mobile phone like remote control which works up to 200 meters.

I haven't found an English site yet but it looks very promising.
The AIS data can be transferred to any device understanding NMEA streams.

Though I don't know if AIS is a dual band receiver?

The price is interesting too: 449 Euro but I've seen it for 379 Euro too.
We are using "airmail" connecting via "winlink" to hopefully be able to send and receive email, so far somewhat spasmodic.

I have been having a fair number of problems, but the main one is that the Macbook "loses" the connection between "airmail" and the modem while running XP. I have to do a total reboot re the XP and often (mostly) it will lose the connection again. Today it even lost the com 5 port and said it didn't have one. Managed to get that back, but once again "lost" the connection. I have installed "chokes" on the ends of the usb cables connecting the computer to the modem which enabled me to connect to a station accepting email.

A side issue is that I have only been able to connect to Ks1Xa to down load email, a reputably, very reliable connection, anybody else; not so much, as in never!

Getting very frustrated, as we're leaving soon to go down the west coast to Mexico and we really like to rely on out setup, but not so far.

Does anyone have similar experiences and thus some answers? I'm sure I have my settings correct, but am getting somewhat lost in the arcane world of XP!!!!

Really appreciate any help
I use an ibook G4 800 Mhz, 640 GB for Navigation with GPSNavX and MacEnc in the Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean. I had to replace the hard drive now 3 times. The first time I thought that the reason was the difficulty I had with the Power supply. But after the third time, the ibook broke down, I think now that the hard drive crashes, because the vibrations or even shocks are too hard. We sailed sometimes in rough conditions.
Does anybody have the same experience or have any idea to avoid hard drive crashes in the future? I dont want to use another of my powerbooks or buy a macbook air just for navigation, because otherwise the ibook works fine (surprisingly with Mac OS X 10.5.4
I hope someone can help

Some things I'm wondering:
1) does the mac battery suffer much from GPS receiver draw?
2) I'll surely be letting my mac 'sleep'. Does GPSnavX and the receiver allow this? Does the mac wake up quickly to provide a fresh fix?
Specifically, does the Brookhouse unit function without the computer in place, and, do they interface well with the Macs when it comes time to program them? I see Apple is still only offering the airline adapter which won't work on the boat. Has any third party filled in the gap by providing one of these? It seems that running my MacBook on the inverter uses a couple of amps/hour more than my old Powerbook did plugged directly into a 12-volt receptacle via a Lind adapter. I think you lose something every time you step the power up or down.
has introduced an AIS receiver for use with laptops.

It's called AIS-2-USB (it exits as AIS-2-NMEA version too) and fits via an USB cable to your laptop. Power supply is assured via the USB connector. The AIS receiver switches between channel A and B.

The external antenna is being attached to the other connector. Ready! As simple as that!

One main advantage is that it can be used on any boat, with just a laptop. Only the antenna needs to be fixed somewhere!

Here's a short description an pictures:
(look for AIS-2-USB)

On the Comar System homepage check the products page.
I am not a techie and reading the documentation with the Keyspan is a bit confusing to me. Given the age of this Garmin, any reason to think it will not work with OS-X given that it is only sending/receiving NMEA data? It does have the necessary wires in the cable for NMEA out and in.

Switching Between NMEA Talkers

My recently purchased 1997 Nordic Tug has the original chart plotter and autopilot. They work well for basic navigation as there are no longer charts available for it. I am adding a mac laptop running MacEnc software and a separate gps. I would like to use the Miniplex lite as it allows the addition of an AIS receiver. I would also like to be able to bypass the new additions and go back to the original system. Problem is the Miniplex lite is usb powered and so will not work without the computer in place. The Miniplex 41USB is self powered but costs much more and will not handle the speed of an AIS receiver. I am thinking of a switching system to switch between the two systems but this seems cumbersome. Any suggestions?
