Bio: Captain Russ Johnson

Master 100 Ton Ocean, Sail, Towing
2000+ days at sea

Russ grew up skiing in the mountains of Utah and hearing his father talk about sailing to Hawaii. The idea of being on the open ocean with only the wind to power the vessel was intriguing to him at a very early age. Russ didn’t get many opportunities to experience sailing until he was a teenager when he first felt the wind power the sails of a Hobie Cat on Lake Tahoe. At age 16, Russ fell in love with sailing. Russ spent a lot of time on small boats when he was a Deep Sea Diver in the US Navy, and there he developed his small-boat seamanship skills. He has been planning this voyage to Hawaii for over 10 years by getting the US Sailing training and certifications, buying a boat specifically for this trip, equipping the boat, and selecting the crew.
Russ can be found on the ski slopes or riding his Harley along the California coast when not sailing.
