I know I am getting old and forgetful but help me out. I haven't used GPSNAvX since last year and I can't find the panel that allows me to choose the little hand grabber or the red outlines of all the charts that intersect the one I am looking at. It seemed like in the past I couldn't get that panel to go away and now for the life of me I can't get it to show up. Any ideas? Thanks Todd

I can not really see the point of mcenc. Mcenc surely can read also vector charts, but they are so expensive and hard to get hold of. Or? I don not get it.
I got these tsunamis charts on another windows computer, but I can not use them! But they are these kind of vector charts. And so on.

Question for users of french and italian charts.
I ave 36 french charts and 4 italian charts, buy in june 2008 with a 3 months subscribe. I have update twice this set, in august and september
Today, I can use the french charts but I can't see and use the italian charts. Because I can install only one catolog.031 file. If i try to install an other n (update) it is empty.
I think it is a directory problem but after several change it is always the same problem.

I now have the 3.0 beta os for the iphone 3G and iNavX does not run with it. The app opens but then shuts down..
Just thought that someone might like to know.

iNavX 1.2.0 (expected to be available in the next couple weeks) supports the download, import and display of GRIB files. Here is a pre-release screen shot..

Like the charts, the GRIB files are cached and be displayed until the user deletes them from iNavX.

I have been using GPSnavX for the last few seasons. Great application!

This year I am thinking of upgrading to MacENC. Is ChartWorld the only place to download charts from? It seems strange to be tied to one website for charts.

Following on the "TOPO Maps for MacENC and GPSNavX" thread, I noticed a new app just dropped that displays USGS topographic maps on the iPhone. They claim complete coverage of the USA, and, like iNavX, the maps are downloaded onto the phone for use when out of data service range. Although I haven't used it yet, it seems to have very limited quiver of actual nav tools. I am still waiting for a program with iNavX's function (or better yet, iNavX itself!) which supports USGS (or equivalent) topographic maps.

I bought a little usb GPS (sirf chip, the one linked from macenc.com) to play with.
I found that these things behave somewhat unusually when connected to a Mac. In essence, the buffer of serial data is never "flushed" so the same data is being read over and over at maximum speed.

This is true for both MacEnc (I can see the lines flying by in GPS log window) and for any other program connected to the serial port device (such as when using "screen").

Well, question asked is question answered. It appears that the device wants to use their own modified version of PL2303 driver. It remains to be seen if their driver would work with standard PL2303 devices - it would be unfortunate if it did not.

I'll leave the post here in case anyone stumbles upon the same issue.

On the power consumption - I read through the article you referenced and it appeared this was just for the mini and did not include a monitor. What your post said (and the article) works out to about 1 ah at idle and 2+ ah running. What do you think your consumption would be with a small monitor? My biggest disappointment in using a computer onboard has been the power consumption. My Macbook seems to draw upwards of 4 ah much of the time, making the potentially the biggest power draw on my boat (more than my refer). That alone has pushed me away from using it for ongoing navigation, and instead more for planning. I'm trying to keep my total 'cruising' power usage at or under 100 ah/day.
