Found this and have not tried, but it appears you can setup your iPhone (w/ iOS 4.3 or later) as a Hotspot. Once that is done and iPad or other iDevice tethered to the Hotspot will also get the GPS information. So an example would be iNavX running on an iPad WiFi model, with the iPad WiFi tethered to the iPhone 4 Hotspot. More info ..

Still I would recommend getting an iPad 3G which includes a stand-alone GPS receiver as opposed to the WiFi only model which does not include a GPS receiver.

I've just bought a "new" motorboat in the UK. Many of the systems are 30 years old and there is no gps at all. As a Mac user for 20 years, I'm really keen to extend the Mac to my boat and am considering buying an iPad (my main work computer is a Macbook Pro, but it is too vital to my work to risk taking it sailing!).
Question - is the iPad a suitable basis for the main navigation system (as a gps/chartplotter) with iNavX, a gps receiver such as advertised on their site and Navionics Gold charts (UK waters only required) via X-Traverse... plus other transducers etc to be added later?
Or would I be better to buy a dedicated gps/chartplotter from Garmin or whoever?

Advise updating iOS to version 4.3 as it appears to have fixed a memory leak where some iPad apps would exit because of lack of memory.

Connect the N2K backbone to the SeaSmart WiFi. The backbone will provide provide power.

Once connected, link iNavX to SeaSmart WiFi ..

Connect an Actisense NGW-1 ISO to a Brookhouse iMux:

Blue wire to NMEA CH1,2, or 3 of the iMux B
White wire to NMEA CH1,2, or 3 of the iMux A

If you are using an iPad and have a N2K autopilot:

Black wire to NMEA Differential (RS422) Out of the iMux B
Red wire to NMEA Differential (RS422) Out of the iMux A

Connect NGW-1 ISO to N2K backbone.

Once connected, link iNavX to iMux ..

NOTE: Both the iMux and iAIS can be simultaneously interfaced to a Mac or PC via a USB port. This allows the N2K data (Converted to N0183) to flow to both iNavX and a marine navigation application on a PC or a Mac.

Realize that all your iPad apps will transfer over without having to pay again.

but how can I rotate chart (either vector or raster)
while viewing it at home (w/o GPS heading data present)

Hi there,

When displaying wave data is it possible to display the wave height as well as the direction? I'm unable to find an option to switch that on.

When offshore it's nice to be able to request one grib file containing all the weather data (I realize you have to watch the size with SSB email) but it would be real nice in the app if you could then just switch between the data that you need to see.

It has stability fixes and updated harmonics for some European stations. Unfortunately it also removes many current stations in the US, as we no longer match NOAA's predictions. NOAA isn't releasing the harmonics for the current stations, and the ones we have are turning old and moldy - hence they've been removed. When NOAA releases their updates, we'll add the stations back in to the database.
