Does anyone have an opinion on the relative merits of Solteknik ($99) versus Navionics ($29) charts for Finland and the Baltic? Are Solteknik worth the extra $$? Using INavX on my iPad.

I have Navionics on both my iphone and my ipad. I had to purchase it again when I upgraded my iphone from a 3gs to a 4, ok, I accepted that. Then I had a problem with the ipad version crashing, so I wrote to Navionics a few days ago and they suggested I delete the app, download it again and re-install. Their email also said I would not be charged for the app again, so i did as suggested, then I find out that I was charged for the app. Navionics have upgraded the app to allow wireless connection between Raymarine and either the ipad or iphone if you use a newer E series which I do not have. The second upgrade is that you don't download the full map set, just what you want in smaller segments. Now that's a hassle, but the big issue is that they changed the name, same app and they want us to buy it again instead of their stated free upgrades for life....
I am going to connect Apple since I thing this is a scam. So I guess it a case that any app supplier that stated "Free upgrades" can change the name, delete the old version from itunes and expect one to buy again for a upgrade that fixes bugs.

Would it be an idea to include an option to safe a list of TCP/IP hosts in InavX in the future?

To Mac users,

I found out about Polar Navy software when I received the recent Active Captain newsletter. I have been testing the software preparing for the upcoming boating season on my MacBook Pro and iPad at home.

I will have the MacBook at the main nav station and the iPad on the fly-bridge. The iPad mirrors my main display using an App called Air Display that is available for Apple App store. From the iPad I can control the entire program using the touch screen.The Polar Navy software is fantastic!

For the record, I have no affiliation with any of the companies or products I mention. I am just a happy mariner that wants to know where he is going while on the water.

Today I started thinking to use iPad as alternative for some chart plotter device such RAYMARINE A70.
What i figured out is that I should have GPS app (iNavX maybe) + maps (Navionics Mediterranean) + some IPG device with NMEA protocol (Maretron IPG100 or cheaper Digi Connect® Wi-SP) + depthmeter or echosounder (Maretron?) which is connected to NMEA device.

My question is, if above configuration will work and what depthmeter I can attach to Digi device? Maretron is too expensive, but it has all the features + iPad app.

Will iNavx show depth if ipad is attached over WiFi on some NMEA depthmeter device?

Will the iPad built in GPS will be enough for sailing, or I should attach some external (Bad Elf GPS maybe)?

Is there a way to turn off the range rings in Polar Navy or are they always on when connected to a GPS?

this season I will sail on a yacht which is equipped with a Notebook running Windows. As navigation software "Chart Navigator Professional" by NV-Verlag is installed.
As far as I found out, there is no way to connect an iPad to that application as it cannot serve NMEA data via TCP/IP.
Is there an easy and not too expensive way to get the iPad connected? Basically I need a software which only acts as a server. No navigational functions needed as that will be done by "Chart Navigator".
Does anyone know a piece of share- or freeware to accomplish this job?

PS: Serial port replication is not an issue here as the AIS receiver/Multiplexer has a USB and a serial output - so there is one for each application.

While the easiest way to transfer waypoints and routes to iNavX is to use X-Traverse or email, there may be times when a live internet connection is not available.

1) Launch MacENC (v8.30 or later).

2) Select "TCP/IP" on the MacENC "GPS" menu.

3) Select "Connect" on the MacENC "GPS" menu to establish the connection with the GPS receiver. If no GPS receiver is available then select "Simulator".

4) On the TCP/IP NMEA Data window, enable the "Server" and check the "Transmit" check boxes. Uncheck "Processed".

5) Launch iNavX (v3.2.0 or later).

6) On the iNavX TCP/IP NMEA Client enter the host and port (as displayed in MacENC). Set "Enable Waypoints" to ON. Set "AIS Targets Only" to OFF. Set "AP Repeat" to OFF. Set "Link" to ON. Set "Location Services" to OFF. At this point there should be NMEA data displayed in monitor.

7) Return to MacENC and activate the waypoint or route (i.e. "Goto" button) in the respective "Waypoints" or "Routes" window. iNavX will immediately import the waypoint or route and begin navigation to it. Step 7 can be repeated for additional waypoints or routes.


Notes:

To select which route is plotted on the iNavX chart, select the blue disclosure button next to the route name in the iNavX "Routes" view. The selected Route will be shown in a bold font.

To cancel navigation to the waypoint or route. In MacENC on the Navigation panel select "Cancel Goto" button. Then in iNavX select "Cancel Goto" on the "Waypoints" view.

No one else seems to have done this, so I created a very crude app that converts four-line gpx waypoints to c-map xml files.

The error checking is minimal and I'm not sure it really works, but take a look...
