The Navionics charts look sharper on my MacBook Air than on my 27-inch iMac.
Why would this be?

Maybe a link to a photo (not screen shot) of each would be helpful. Both Macs use LED backlighting. Personally I thought the charts (all formats) look better on the iMac 27" than a Macbook Core Duo.
MacENC renders charts identical on all Macs, but it is up to the graphics hardware and display for the end result.
Macbook Air 13" - NVIDIA GeForce 9400M (1280 by 800 pixels)
iMac 27" - ATI Radeon HD 4670 (2560 by 1440 pixels)
