Hi. I am a bluewater cruiser with boat currently in Australia. I am new to this forum but have just ordered my first Mac.(macbook pro 13in) I am wondering where to look for good software I can use.

Amongst other things I will need a new Grib file reader. I used to use Ugrib on my old PC but I don't think that there is a Mac version. I normally download the grib files via Iridium.

Looking forward to learning to use the new toy and hoping it will do the job for me.

I'm thrilled to find this site. Thanks GPSNavX for directing me here. I have just downloaded GPSNavX on to my MacBook Air and iNavX on to my Ipad. I assume with the iNavX on the Ipad I do not need a GPS antenna since it is built in but I do with the GPSNavX. Is one system favored over the other? The Ipad has longer battery life and it is more portable. I sail off the coast of North Carolina and I understand the only charts available are the NOAA charts. Besides the help/settings that come with these programs are there other 'help' sites that would help me get going? I have a Garmin chartplotter on my sailboat. Can I connect my GPSNavX to the Garmin's GPS signal? Thanks for any assistance. Brent

Does anybody have experience running Mr. Tides on an iPad in conjunction with GPSNavX?

Has anybody had experience navigating with GPSNavX using an iPad rather than a laptop on board?

Long Range-High Speed Marine WiFi As a Mac developer from nearly Mac day one and life long boater, I thought I would join a sailing forum, actually 2. It was a pretty ugly experience. I am not sure, but I think they were all die hard WINDOWS users with that common mentality I think we all know quite well and I will not bother saying anything more on that other than, "I unsubscribed" after a lot of abusive treatment due to my open discussions on all things technical, hardware and software. I am deeply involved (for years now) with long range WiFi and WiMAX equipment development for marine applications and I found and do continue find, there is a lot of seriously bad and mis-information AND outright lies out there in the real world on this subject and that people are down right starving for straight talk on hardware, software, RF, WiFi, WiMAX and, range, data rates, a simple education on AP/Gateways and the different systems, log-ins, code systems, gear and the such and wondered if anyone may have an interest?? I have a lot of knowledge on that subject matter due to my involvement in it and thought this may be a better place for such discussions and a good place to seek shared knowledge on MacENC and GPSNavX, which I need to learn A LOT more about. I have the software, but although a techy/prop head in other fields, I am a paper chart, pencil, dividers, parallel rules guys - old school navigator and need to use it more (MacENC and GPSNavX) and definitely learn a lot more. Anyway, thought I would see who is around here in the world of sailors with Mac's. I am guessing, it is a different experience and certainly hope so. AND, can anyone tell me how to put my vessel pict on my profile? She's much better looking than I, so . . . . . . I'm considering installing an E-Series Raymarine and want to know how I will be able to transfer routes, waypoints, etc. from MacENC to the Raymarine E-Series.

Have you ever had someone get on your computer and start pushing keys on your keyboard, causing your computer to freeze up or shut down? Sometimes friends of your offspring do this while you are away at work, or out on the patio having a beer. Occasionally files are deliberately deleted by a vindictive spouse, or significant other, or by an over competitive co-worker. And there is always encroachment upon your system by Trojan Horses, and other "Malware". You may also own computers that are used by employees, and occasionally abused by them.

If your computer gets to the point where your hard drive needs to be formatted, and the operating system needs to be replaced, or if you need to get deleted files back where they belong, or document unauthorized or illegal usage of a hard drive, there is a way to recover the data that would ordinarily be lost in such situations.

When your operating system is still functional, you can recover files from the same partition that you are running Windows on, or from other partitions, with certain data recovery software. When you are doing any type of recovery, you must remember that you cannot put recovered data of any kind back in the same partition that it has been recovered from. When you are performing any kind of data recovery, especially non-specific recovery, you must also remember to have an active virus program running to catch viruses that you may undelete.

You can use Data Recovery software to recover data from a drive with a corrupted operating system by using another operating system with the software on another drive or partition. If the data is on your primary partition, you have to have another operating system configured as the master or "boot" drive with the recovery software, and the one you want to recover data from configured as a slave, or non-boot drive. Then you can just go into the drive you are having problems with, and recover all of the data to another place, or find specific items that you need, and put them where they can be found, and then reinstall them where they belong later.

Data recovery software will not repair a corrupted or non-functional operating system, but you can retrieve any important data that you need when you are restoring that operating system, including any saved pictures or work on the corrupt drive.

Undelete software understands the internal workings of the system used to store files on a disk (the file system) and uses this knowledge to locate the disk space that was occupied by a deleted file. Because another file may have used some or all of this disk space, there is no guarantee that a deleted file can be recovered. But if the space hasn't been re-used right away, there is a very good chance that you will succeed. People who use data recovery software are often amazed to find that it recovers files that were deleted months or even years ago. The best undelete programs give you an indication of the chances of recovering a file intact and even provide file viewers so you can check the contents before recovery. Some famous data recovery software is designed to recover lost data which is due to several reasons.

For my navigation planning, I store my charts on a network hard drive (D-Link 323 with mirrored 750 drives). The drive stays mounted but doesn't spin up unless called. If I forget to double click the finder each time before I startup MacENC, the chart manager tosses all my charts. It takes ten to fifteen minutes to rebuild my library. What's the possibility of saving a chart package by name then being able to load it back into MacENC. There might be some other advantages like regional packs and trip packs that would be useful as well.

Any thoughts, any one else have all their charts disappear?
