  opens wrong google earth
Posted by: outstripp - October 22, 2010 18:50 - Forum: MacENC & GPSNavX - Replies (1)

When I right-click on a chart in GPSNaxX to open Google Earth, the wrong GE (The one inside my Parallels Virtual Machine) opens. Where is this setting kept and how can I change it?

  icon pointing
Posted by: Richard R - October 16, 2010 05:19 - Forum: iNavX - Replies (2)

The green triangle icon on inavX/ iPad doesn't point in the direction that I am actually moving, and when I click course up, up is the direction the icon is pointing. The velocity vector is accurate. How do I get the pos icon to point correctly?

  any using Etrex as realtime?
Posted by: Bikerbob - October 12, 2010 09:07 - Forum: Hardware - Replies (2)

Hey all, I am a small keelboat sailor on Lake Ontario (Canada)

I am planning on doing more cruising these next few years, and thought planning or following my progress in the trip would be fun, and informitive.

I have a G3/800 ibook I want to use as my onboard machine, because of size, battery consumption and I have it sitting around.

I have a yellow Etrex, which I have used as my onboard GPS for years, it has the garmin serial.

I bought one of the inexpensive prolific chip usb to serial cables... but on mac or pc I have yet to get communications to work.. (on one pc direct with serial cable only)

I have updated the etrex on the pc before, so, the question is.. usb-serial is too cheap?? I dont have another serial device to try..

OR maybe the etrex is not usable for realtime???

Does anyone know?

thanks

James

  iPad and sunlight
Posted by: JoMeKe - October 12, 2010 08:46 - Forum: iPad - Replies (2)

Working towards getting an iPad as a mirror monitor to use topside. How are people finding the iPad screen in sunlight (as opposed to daylight) conditions. A friend reports that, when wearing polarized sunglasses, the screen is close to unreadable, I assume due to a coating on the iPad glass. They will switch to their Kindle if reading a book outside for that reason. I have the same problem with my radio screen in my car. I know it is the polarization because if I turn my head sideways, the screen is visible (remember the little tag on the original Polaroid sunglasses?).

Thanks

  Looking for older demo
Posted by: Bikerbob - October 10, 2010 21:57 - Forum: MacENC & GPSNavX - Replies (1)

Sorry if this is out of line,

But I am running a G3 800 ibook, was told that 5.40 is the last G3 compatible version.

Anyone have the demo dmg still on their computer?

I cannot find it on the net anywhere all DL links return to developor page, and they are only demo'ing latest version.

  iPad WiFi Bug
Posted by: mcgargle - October 9, 2010 21:25 - Forum: iNavX - Replies (9)

iNavX is great, but I have found a network bug on the iPad IOS 3.2, iNavX v3.1.6.

When I try to download a new NOAA chart while connected via wifi, more often than not iNavX will sit there for a few minutes and then say:

"Warning Unable to Download ... (timed out)"

The download is successful about 2/5 times.

The bug is exacerbated when I try to download multiple charts, for example selecting "Yes, All USA East". The first one or two charts download, then the connection times out again.

I have tried multiple wifi networks on different days in various locations, with identical results.

The same iNavX version on my iPhone, connected to the same wifi network, works fine.

HOWEVER, if I turn off wifi on the iPad and turn on cellular data, IT WORKS CORRECTLY WITH NO DELAY AND NO TIMEOUTS!

Hence, it seems likely that iNavX is having trouble making a network connection. Presumably this is in the network code, and the packets are never moving down the TCP/IP stack.

In order to test this, I installed Firewall IP. The problem was unchanged but, interestingly, Firewall IP never pops up a message about an outgoing connection on the occasions that iNavX is timing out, lending support to the notion that the iNavX software is failing to generate any packets. On the times that iNavX does not time out, Firewall IP correctly pops up a rule box, and then the chart download proceeds normally once I have allowed the connection.

The problem is severe because it is making it very difficult to download all of the NOAA charts for an area.

  NMEA Data from BU-353 GPS
Posted by: Cirruscloud - October 8, 2010 15:56 - Forum: Hardware - Replies (1)

I'm trying to find a way to get the NMEA data from my BU-353 USB GPS so I can connect the DSC on my VHF and SSB radios.

Is there a multiplexer on the market that has a few usb ports as well as NMEA ports? I don't want to purchase another NMEA GPS if I don't have to.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Brennan
