Bad news:

For those who purchased the Navionics ipad app, beware that the tide data is wrong.

Good news:

I emailed Navionics about my findings, and they responded that they were aware of the problem and expect to have an update available soon.

By default iNavX is set to use True. This can be changed by accessing the Instruments "Setup" either from the iNavX main menu "Preferences" or from the "Instruments" view. Set "True Bearings" to "OFF" in order to use Magnetic.

Does the track feature create a track every time I open the app? Even just to mess/look around?

And how do I delete points on a track before I export? OR even after I export? I don't want to see my actual track PLUS twelve other points from every time and place I opened the app. That's kind of silly.

From the Chart List:

When a Region is selected from the iNavX main menu a Chart List is presented. Charts may be selected three ways:

1) "Magnifying Glass". Lists all charts or enter a chart number or name. Sorted by chart number or alphabetically.

2) "Pos" From the device position. Lists all charts that intersect with the device position. Sorted by chart scale.

3) "Recents". Charts which have been recently opened. Sorted by last chart opened.


From a Chart (Raster Only):

When a chart is selected from the Chart List, it is displayed. Switching to a different raster chart can be done four ways:

1) Return to the Chart List by selecting the back button in the upper left hand corner.

2) Selecting the "+" or "-" button. These buttons when selected will present a menu of available charts that intersect the center of the screen. The "+" button menu will list charts that are larger in scale (i.e. more detail). The "-" button menu will list charts that are smaller in scale (i.e. less detail).

3) Tapping on the chart to display context menu. The largest scale chart (most detail) that intersects with where tapped will be listed in the menu. The bounds of the larger scale charts are plotted in red on the chart when "Show Boundaries" is "ON" in the "Setup".

4) Automatically. The largest scale chart will automatically display when "Pos. Icon Kept Visible" and "ON" in the "Setup" AND the device position is on the displayed chart. As the device position changes, the chart(s) will automatically open.

Reading many reports that original iPhone 3G becomes quite sluggish after installing iOS 4. Not impacting all other iOS 4 compatible devices. Maybe best to stick with iOS 3.1.3 on iPhone 3G.

Is there a Show All/ Hide All button on iNavX for iPad?

Hiding each racing mark individually is a pain.

I'm outfitting my sail boat for blue water cruising and am planning to build in a mac mini to run MacENC as my real time dashboard.

Boat is 36 foot traditional cruiser - currently minimally equipped with speed/depth, VHS, and compass. I've been using handheld GPS for most ocean trips.

I'm moving from Puget Sound to San Diego and want to upgrade with radar, tiller pilot, and ais transponder (so I can hopefully be 'seen' in the ocean and the fog).

Wondering what components people have integrated with MacENC successfully. My electronics guy has proposed two different radar systems - one is Furuno 1715 LCD/18" http://www.consumersmarine.com/modperl/p...1&i=200065 (seems like "basically just radar") which is cool if I can just feed the data and view it on MacEnc.

Other suggestion is Furuno NavNet VX 2 system 1834C/NT http://www.go2marine.com/product.do?no=196571F which is way more money and seems to also want to do MacENC's job?

I'm new to all this boat electronics stuff (although I work as a Mac/iPhone developer and would donate programming effort to get a better system for myself).

What would you experts buy for radar? Is the less expensive one fine if what I'm looking for is help through fog into marinas, weather info, and big iron avoidance?

What am I missing?

Finally - interfacing the tiller pilot to the Mac - what kind of benefits does this have? Can I feed it course info from the computer? I'm looking at a Navico TP32 (beefiest I could find). I'm only using this for motoring - I have a Monitor vane for steering under sail.

1) From the iNavX main menu select the region.

2) Use a swipe gesture to remove a specific chart

OR..

3) Select the specific chart you wish to remove (name will be in a bold font). Note: The World Chart cannot be removed.

4) Select the "i"nfo button in the lower right hand corner of the chart.

5) Select Action button in the upper left hand corner.

6) Select "Remove Chart". Select "Yes" for the individual chart or "All.." for all charts in the region.

7) To turn off a region on the main menu return to the iNavX main menu and select "Add More Charts To Menu". Note: Turning off a region does not delete the charts.

8) Select the Chart source (i.e. NOAA, Navionics).

9) Select "OFF" for the region to disable.

So far most of the tests I've run in iOS 4 show no problem, except for one thing - time zone abbreviations no longer work right. For instance, in France the abbreviation on systems less than 4.0 showed CEST (or CEDT depending on the DST), but on 4.0 they come up as GMT+02:00. Yuck. I'm working on a fix but it might mean having to code new abbreviations for a lot of time zone names, which will take a while - there are a lot of them!
