I've installed my mac mini on the boat and tested it by powering the mini with its normal power brick. Now the time has come to cut the cord up and splice it to the power output of a Carnetix PSU. I am hesitant to cut the cord until I know what it looks like inside.

I've already cut and spliced the power cord to my LCD monitor. That cord resembled a coax cable inside, with a braided outer conductor. Since there were still only two conductors, it was simple enough to gather the braided outer to one side and splice it to one power lead.

The mini power plug appears to have 5 conductors. Since the plug is non-directional, that must mean there are actually 3 conductors. (+, -, ground?) Am I going to find 3 wires in that cord, or 2 wires with a ground shield?

I am moving to a mac mini macOS/Win 7 setup, complete with Carnetix PSUs. The upgrade has been the most cumbersome in my 20+ year history of using macs. Among many, many issues was a Migration Assistant problem with the mini (10.6.3) and the macbook (10.4.11). It took a few days to get the data transferred so I began life on the mini with a user account in the boat's name. By the time I got my old account transferred I had added enough stuff to the boat account that I wanted the option of running MacENC in either account.

I've migrated to several laptops in the past few years, most recently to my girlfriend's laptop in case my older unit died at sea. Since she didn't like the idea of MacENC running in my account on her laptop, I figured out how to make it run under her account too. Basically, copies of all the plist files are placed in each account, and MacENC would run under either account. If fast user switching was in use, MacENC could not be started in both accounts, but that didn't matter, since either account (actually, her account) would get us home.

This time I went through the same procedure, but I accidentally moved the original files rather than copying them between accounts (Side lesson: beware of the root user). MacENC wouldn't start under the boat account so I went back to my old account where I discovered my mistake. I moved copies back to their original locations in the old account and MacENC wouldn't start there either. Now both accounts demand an activation code.

What happened? Has something changed in MacENC or OS10.6, or did I just scramble something? I know that I moved all of the relevant files, as listed under Help.

Right now both laptops work fine and the mini works as Win7/Maxsea but... Maxsea is a bloated pig that crashes! I am using Maxsea strictly for the 3D bottom mapping function. When Maxsea goes to hell I want to reboot as a mac and go back to something that works.

iNavX has the ability to display the list of targets. They can be sorted by vessel name or distance from position. To access the list go to the "Instruments" view and then tap "TCT:". Tapping the magnifying glass button will scroll the chart to the selected target and highlight the selected target. Tapping any target name on the chart or in the target list will display more detail.

The international standard for wind speed is usually m/s not Km/h. (Not available on iNavX)

I have been a happy user of GPSNavX for the last year using a 12" G4 ibook with the USB GPS receiver. I recently replaced my old vhf radio with the new Standard Horizon GX2100 and am trying to figure out how to connect my GPS output to the radio and the AIS input to my computer. I have a Keyspan USB/Serial port (do I need two?) but am not very tech savy as how to connect the serial port end to the wires to/from the radio. Has anyone else tried this?

With all these marine navigation apps available for iPad I thought I would put together some screen shots (I was also asked for samples). I used the popular Santa Cruz area in the Monterey Bay Northern California. An area I have sailed in frequently.

OK, so I wanted to add a waypoint while sitting in my living room. so i pull up Waypoints and hit NEW which creates the waypoint. I then went over to latitude to enter in the coordinates and this is where the problems begin... (See screenshot)



The field goes "open" so data can be entered
I can put in numbers with no symbols or spaces only.
It will not allow me to exist the field via esc, delete, arrows, ect...so I'm stuck
I then chose to use the DELETE button which removed the entire waypoint but also moved the blank field to my next waypoint...that I do not want to delete.

I was able to close the program, not save waypoints and replicate this again.

What am I missing here?

We're sitting at the mouth of the Straits of Juan de Fuca. In about 2 hours we'll pull anchor and head direct for the Marquesas, 3500 miles away, with my iPad (sorry, sans gps) and iNavX 3.0 onboard. Check back in about 35 days and I'll tell you how she worked. 3.0 came out in the nick of time and managed to download charts all the way around to Africa! (Rich, got a few more this morning)

iNavX 3.0.0 has been approved by Apple and should show up as a free update to all iNavX users on their device and iTunes.

iNavX 3.0.0 adds:

iPad support.
Portrait and Landscape orientation support (iPad only).
Selecting a row in the Instruments view will display real-time large display for selected data.

NV-Verlag 2010 regions.
