Brazil DHN update in the Marine GeoGarage

A request for apps that show compass bearings. Please indicate whether TRUE or MAGNETIC bearing and allow for selection of either.

I see so many apps with just a number for a bearing and no indication as to whether it is a TRUE or MAGNETIC bearing.

Mr. Tides 4 is coming along nicely. I've got a lot of the core functions up and running - station selection via the list, the various views on the station, exporting values, saving/reading from file, etc. Still have a lot to go (for instance, the date pickers don't work) and the map interface isn't there but it's slowly coming together.

I'm targeting Leopard (10.5) as the minimum OS version, although it would be nice to target Snow Leopard instead. There's a lot of good stuff in 10.6 that I can use, so this might change between now and release.

An AIS transponder can be used as the GPS source for MacENC.

1) Connect AIS Transponder to Mac. Disconnect any other GPS receiver. Be sure to install any USB to Serial software driver for the adapter in use.

2) Launch MacENC from the "Applications" folder.

3) Select "Connect" on the "AIS/RADAR" menu.

4) Select "Settings" button to open Settings drawer.

5) Uncheck "Use GPS Port".

6) Uncheck "Use Instruments Port".

7) Select the Port of the AIS transponder (i.e. KeySerial1, usbserial-xxxx).

8) Select Rate to 38,400.


To see Own vessel info in the GPS panel:

1) Select "Connect" on the "GPS" menu.

2) Select "Settings" button to open Settings drawer.

3) Select "Type" as "IP Only".

I just used iNavX to navigate in and around the BVI's for a week and had a few usability issues.

1) I used an iPad w/ SealLine waterproof cover. With gloved fingers or when it rained, crewmembers would frequently accidentally tap the screen resulting in the chart disappearing -- either due to navigating to the "track" screen, opening preferences, or accidentally going "back" to chart selection menu. Would be great to be able to "lock" the chart view that requires a swiping motion or similar to unlock. Said "Lock" view should center around the current position with the ability to set the default scale

2) When I am using tracks and waypoints, I couldn't find an obvious way to select the next/previous waypoint from the chart screen. If I go to the routes screen, you need to navigate to the specific route in order to select "next" waypoint. Would be great to have an easier way to select next/previous waypoint on current route.

3) The application needs a big icon to automatically go straight to a chart view at max zoom around the current position so that you can get back to seeing your surroundings no matter how many levels deep you are into the menu system. This would also be a quicker way to start w/o having to pick a random chart first. Default to vector charts as well over raster.

4) Track recorder: Would be great to allow recording named tracks rather than one long track. Inside the application itself would be great to record/display tabular data so that you have SOG, COG, time, lat, lon, VMG, etc.. This is much less important than #1/#2 above

Having read some of the previous posts on here, I think iNavX on iPad is most useful as a permanent on device while sailing rather than as something to be checked occasionally. If I could find a way to mount the iPad better than just using parachute cord and hardwire power -- i would!

Looking for hints on how to get PolarCom working on my MacBook air. I have Polaview working fine. Downloading charts and loading routes no problem. Attached a ND-100s GPS USB dongle and got it running fine. But When I start PolarCom it just gives me a blank white section of screen.

Any ideas greatly appreciated. LOve macs and love PolarView. JUst gotta get this sorted and off I go.
