The scaling method being used for the chart could stand some optimization on the iPad retina display, it is scaling at less than the possible resolution and obscuring features that could otherwise be displayed very chart with the NOAA RNC charts. For an example, zoom in in a section ofmchart, then pinch to zoom out, but don't release. The pinched text is sharp as a tack, but when you release your fingers it recalculates and actually displays something less sharp.

It would also be great to not have to wait for the image to redraw when scrolling, is something keeping the program from keeping the whole image in active memory to enable smooth scrolling like on google maps after its loaded a large area?

I've been doing a rewire of my electronics and there is a detail I don't fully understand. Some of the wires are shielded. Some of the shielded wires have also been cut. I'm trying to learn some rule about when or how to connect the shield to something else.

On some things, like my Shipmodul multiplexer, there are a/b connectors plus a shield connector. I read somewhere that the shield only gets connected at one end of the wire. Which end, and how do I know that?

My current understanding (that is, a guess) is this: the shield captures stray RF signals that might induce electrical noise and routes them to ground. Since "ground" means several things on a boat, in this example I am referring to grounding in its strictest sense; providing an entirely separate alternate path to source, which here is the negative terminal of the battery.

Now, if the shield is connected to a ground in the device, and that device has a ground terminal on the back of the case, it seems that connecting a wire shield at both ends must allow current to flow continuously along essentially the same path, rather than a separate alternate path back to the negative terminal. I suspect that I'm missing an important detail here. Would the shield become a more powerful antenna (thus making electrical noise worse) if it is connected at both ends?

To confuse matters, it appears from the schematic in my radar that the shield up to the array is connected at both ends.

Surely there is some good information somewhere to understand this, but so far I have not located it. Can anyone else explain this problem? Surely we've all faced the issue before, and no doubt many incorrect solutions have been created.

I've noticed that MACenc understands the Raymarine MARPA RADAR target messages, but iNavX doesn't show them despte getting the same NMEA feed. I believe the messages are either RSD or TTM.
It'd be great to have them on the iPad, as I often use MARPA to confirm that a shipping I'm seeing really is a particular AIS target

I have a E90 W Raymarine chartplotter, a miniplex 2 wi Ship Module multiplexer and a Mac Enc software with Navionics charts. The question is: Can I built routes and way points with the Mac Enc and transfer them to the chart plotter?

Practical Sailor Sea-trials the iPad and Nav Apps

Hi.

We are new to the forum and so if this has been answered a thousand times before forgive us.

We have just bought an iPad3 and want to install some navigation software for use on our 40 foot sailing boat.

We have a Raymarine installation providing chartplotter, radar, AIS etc. and so the iPad navigation is a chart-table supplement.

There appear to be three options: iNavX, GPSNavX and Navionics HD.

Which is best for our application?

Does one app do more than the others?

the iPad will be used in Europe.

I would be glad to hear from Richard whether iNavX will need to be updated to take advantage of the Retina display?

Will the Navionix charts need updating? Or, as they are vector based, will that not be necessary?

I have a shiny new iPad (2012) and have tested it outside. I am pleased to report the screen is very readable, even in sun light. With the sun actually on the screen, I needed to angle it so that it did not reflect the sun into my eyes, and then the screen was still readable.

[These tests were done with UK March sun and you may get different results in id summer or at lower latitude.]

Is there a way to set a proximity alarm for AIS targets in iNavx, like there is with GPSnavx? I was not able to find it.

I purchased the 2011 edition of the above chart via X-Traverse, to replace the 2010 edition on my iPad. After downloading it I seem to have two 2010 editions on my iPad.

What have I done wrong?
