NZ Linz update in the Marine GeoGarage

Since upgrading to lion then Mountain Lion on my MB pro, I have been unable to obtain a GPS position with Open CPN. It is displaying other vessels with AIS and the 'ls /dev/tty.*' command with Terminal tells me that Prolific serial converter is being recognised but no GPS position.

Anyone else experienced this and any suggestions for a fix?

I have been using GPSNavX on my G4 ibook for four years with great success. I recently purchased a ShipModul MiniPlex-2USB multiplexer and I connected my Tacktick system, GPS and AIS so I could they could be connected to my Mac by the USB connection.

After I connected the USB cable to my Mac and opened GPSNavX I opened the instrument panel and checked the MiniPlex in the Settings box but nothing showes up. What have I done wrong?

Here is my problem. I want to hook my G4 Mac Book Pro to my gps (which I have done via USB and Key-span adapter) , radar and tiller pilot. Well the new wifi multiplexors look real good but it is totally out of my price range. I have been looking for posts about the older style multiplexors which I thought were cheaper. I can't seem to find any. I have looked and looked. ALSO... does anyone know if a tiller pilot's flux gate will talk NMEA to the computer ( Raymarine)? I am at the end of refitting out my 35' steel yawl and am at the skinny side of my wallet. Any help would be appreciated.

I have Navionics charts for use with iNavX. I have seen a couple of symbols used on these that (a) are not on the corresponding NOAA chart(s) and (b) not listed in Chart No 1 (Symbols Abbreviations and Terms).

For example, go to 32d 00.4'N 080d 43.7'W and you will find in this general area on the Navionics US and N. Bahama charts a symbol that looks like a sea bird on a long leg. That is not on the NOAA chart nor is it a NOAA symbol.

Another one I've seen is a circle (I think it was red) with a white horizontal bar in it. It looks sort of like a do not enter street sign, but in some places on the Navionics charts they are spread across a large area. Again they are not a NOAA symbol.

Is there some list of Navionics specific symbols?

I have used Boot Camp, Windows Vista, and Airmail software for e mail access via SSB radio for many years.

But I have a new MacBook Air and I see that Windows 8 is not supported by Apple but see instructions everywhere now to set it up....

Seems like Windows 8 OEM software is available in 32 or 64 bit editions at the same price point.

Any advantage other than a smaller partition size to using the 32 or 64 bit editions? Suggestions which to buy?
