Bahamas (Wavey Line Publishing) update in the Marine GeoGarage

This is a newbie question, but I'd appreciate all advice. I'm delivering a Beneteau 49 from the Northeast U.S. to the Caribbean. I'm old school, started doing this 40 years ago when the big new technological innovation was RDF, and used to do it with paper charts, compass and watch. So for the past few years Chartplotters have been state of the art for me, but have decided it's time to come out of the dark ages and learn/use plotting software, etc. I have a MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion, with BootCamp if I need to run software from the evil empire. I've purchased and played around with MacENC, but that's it. The boat will have an Iridium Sat phone, but no single sideband. Looking for recommendations for the best setup: do I need GPSNavX and the external GPS? Can MacENC be used offshore? (The charts I have for it now don't go to Bermuda or the Caribbean.) Is there a way to get weather and Gulf Stream info into the Mac while at sea through the Iridium phone? Is there better routing software that would calculate the fastest route given wind and current predictions, as you would use in a race like Newport-Bermuda? So many questions... Hoping to make this a learning experience. Thanks!

On both my iPhone and iPad (both are ios6, running v3.6.0) I'm unable to see the waypoint name in a route when I choose "show waypoint, route". This is a new issue. I've always been able to see the name when I choose "show waypoint, route". When I choose "show waypoint, all" all the waypoint names are displayed. But, again the names are not shown when I choose "show waypoint, route". "Show waypoint, none" works. None are shown.

Is it possible to add additional safety depth contour options to the next update, or better yet, customizable?
In my cruising grounds, the gap between 5 m and 2 m is very large which in my case, with a draught of 2.6 m, creates a large area (setting 5 m) with navigable waters which requires constant vigilance to avoid 3 m or less depths.
I've used MacEnc now for several years and I am very pleased with the program, keep up the good work.

Old Mac dead, new Mac with 10.8.2. Restored all the data to the new Mac from my backup drive and MacENC doesn't display the Navionics chart. I have emailed Chartworld as I believe I need a new user permit, but they haven't replied.
Any ideas on what to do next?

I recently installed MacENC and it initially seems to work fine with my MacBook running OS 10.7.4 and EM Trak B100 as a source of GPS and AIS data. However, if the laptop goes into "sleep" mode, it does not reconnect to the serial port. In addition, other applications that use the serial port can no longer connect. I've only been able to reconnect after various combinations of re-booting the laptop and the EM Trak. I've only observed this when using MacENC.

One thing that I've noticed is that the serial port is listed as "modem virtual serial portxxx" where "xxx" is a number (port number?) that changes each time a device is connected. (The exact name might be slightly different... don't have it here to look at.) Under network preferences, there are two iterations of "STM32 virtual COM Port" listed. with a modem symbol. I am wondering if some other application (e.g. Parallels) installed these and if they are mucking things up. Or are they supposed to be there? The phrase "virtual com port" doesn't seem to bring up any information in Apples support documentation.

My next step would be to dry deleting those and see if anything changes. I won't get back to the boat for a few days, so I thought I'd throw it out for any advice here.
