I'm currently using GPSNavX on a Mac netbook in the cockpit, which has limitations of needing a permanent power connection, salt spray, and poor visibility. I've been looking for a daylight-readable display to wire as a remote monitor to a computer running below, but I haven't found a good solution.

At home I run a Mac Mini home theater and control it when I'm feeling really lazy with my iPhone running VNC, the remote display protocol that Apple calls remote desktop. There are VNC clients for virtually every tablet system.

Has anyone used a VNC client-tablet at the helm to display a computer running below? This could be through WiFi, Bluetooth, or maybe ethernet.

Relatedly, I'm eyeing the $140 Nook touch eReader. This has been hacked to allow android apps (I assume VNC would work) and has bluetooth, wifi, and a 6' sunlight-readable touchscreen with 16 shades of grey and a battery that should last 12 hours or more. If this could efficiently mirror my Mac/GPSNavX system below through WiFi or bluetooth, it could be a sweet system. Plus I could use it at night to read Moby Dick.

Reports on VNC success or failure would be helpful.

Can I hook MacENC up to my Raymarine system (C120W chartplotter, AIS, Radar, ST 6002 autopilot, ST60 and ST 70 instruments)?

If so, what is the hardware, the physical means to connect the Raymarine SeaTalk/NMEA network streaming the GPS/AIS/Radar/instrument data into the Mac?

I have been looking at PolarView NS and I am very impressed with its capabilities. I want to inistall it on a Powerbook and would like to integrate it into a Raymarine suite (C-120W chart plotter, ST6001 autopilot, St60 and 70 instruments), essentially reading the Raymarine GPS signal and instrument NMEA data.

Is there a way to connect the PolarView program on my mac to the Raymarine SeaTalk/NMEA network?

Has anyone done this before?

Could you please make the velocity vector longer than 30 minutes? Infinite would be a great option for those longer offshore passages! David

There is a cheap iPhone/iPad app available on the App Store. "MID" shows the basic information from the GPS, compass heading and the heeling as well. Nice option for the real (and expensive) external displays.

Changes include:

Disclosure button in "Desc:" field of Waypoint view, will display a simple text editor for the waypoint description.
"Large NavAids" in the Chart Setup will display text and nav aids on the Chart view slightly larger (Navionics charts).
"Velocity Vector Color" in the Chart Setup will allow selection of the Velocity Vector color.
"Anchor Alarm" accessible from both the iNavX main menu and the "Instruments" banner and view Setup.
"Anchor" button in the "Anchor Alarm" will allow one to set the center position of the anchor alarm at a specific distance and bearing from the current position to compensate for anchor location.
Improved GRIB plotting when zoomed out.
"Open Chart As PDF" in the Chart "i"nfo view allows viewing the Chart in any app that supports PDF viewing (i.e. iBooks, GoodReader).
"Record" on the Track view allows selection of the track recording resolution. The lower the resolution the more track points that are stored.
"Transfer" button on the TCP/IP NMEA client will send waypoints (via $GPWPL NMEA sentence) to host/port. iPad only.

I see Garmin now supports Homeport on Mac OS X. Might be useful for wanting to transfer waypoints/routes to Garmin marine GPS plotter that have a SD card ..
